Austen is one of the UK’s most talented rising producers and engineers. Between 2010-2016 Austen was based at London’s legendary Dean St. Studios as their Head Engineer where he had the opportunity to work with and learn from a vast swathe of the industries most influential artists, producers and record labels. Now working independently as a freelance Producer and Engineer, Austen is going from strength to strength, recently winning a Grammy Award for his work on Adele’s seminal 25 record, and is continuing to add more and more names to an already impressive client list.
Coming from working as the Head Engineer at the famed Dean St. Studios, one of the few remaining commercial recording studios in Central London, Austen has accrued a wealth of knowledge and experience, working alongside and learning from some the music industries most revered artists and producers.
The last few years have been a whirlwind of some of the biggest names in the global and UK market, including Ed Sheeran, Florence and the Machine, Lady Gaga, Paul Weller, A$AP Rocky, Plan B, John Legend, The Weekend and most notably, Adele.
Having engineered on the “25” album, Austen was invited to the 59th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles where his part in helping create the album earned him an award in the ‘Album of the Year’ category.
Running alongside his continued growth as one of the industries most in-demand engineers, Austen is also constantly expanding his Production portfolio. So far his most commercially successful projects have been with British indie band Wolf Alice, with whom he produced both their debut single Bros and the follow up EP Blush, and influential UK artist Plan B on his latest album release Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose.
Now after transferring to the US, he is looking to build on his Grammy and production successes and use the momentum to expand his work across both London and Los Angeles.
Currently is working on vocal production for an artist signed to Interscope for an album release later in 2019.
Getting to offer insight and feedback on new innovative approaches to audio equipment has been a very exciting and intriguing process and I’m pleased that such a hard working company is gaining much deserved critical acclaim for they’re work. It was great to catch up with James at Winter Namm 2019 to get a hands-on demonstration of their latest release the “Stealth” microphone. I was blown away by how they had managed to pack in so many genuinely useful and thoughtful features into a product at such a reasonable price point.
